  Prologue

  "Help! Please, someone help me!"

Donovan pushed through the heavy door searching for sanctuary from the storm. A young woman lay slumped in his arms, barely breathing as she clung to life. Blood leaked from her chest. With blurred vision, Abigail clung to her father.

"What happened?" the bartender asked, rushing to their aid. Carefully, Donovan set his daughter on a sturdy table and reached for the towel that was draped around the bartender’s shoulder.

"She was attacked," Donovan answered, while applying pressure to the wound. The thunder clapped causing them all to shudder at the sound as it bellowed in through the open doors of the tavern.

"By what?" a fellow patron asked, moving to their side to help them. The man stared down at the young maid. He wiped away some wet strands of her hair with a tender brush of his hand.

"I don't know. It was too dark for us to see. But it came out of nowhere," Donovan gasped, trying to keep his daughter from passing out. She lifted her head slightly and glanced around the room. Faces of men surrounded her and all she wanted to do was to escape.

"Papa, please," Abigail pleaded reaching out a weak hand to her father.

"Hush my dear, don't speak. We will get this mended you'll see." A weak smile passed across her father's face. She tried to give one back, but the pain that was coursing through her body was too much. The heat and blood were draining out of her too quickly and she knew she didn't have much time.

"I love you Papa," she sighed, letting her head fall with a thud onto the wooden table.

"No! You can't leave me here, you just can't." Donovan dropped to his knees and rested his head on her. Sorrow and grief filled him as he clung to his dying daughter's hand.

"Sir," the young man touched his shoulder and looked down at him. Donovan barely moved, but with the help of the other patrons, they lifted the grieving man to his feet so the young man had room to work.

"I know you are still in there," the man whispered as he leaned down over the girl. A slight gasp of air wheezed through her parted lips.

"My name is Lucas, I can help you, but you must hold on with every fiber of your being. Do you understand? Do not give up. Not yet." Lucas waited for a reply even though he didn't expect to get one. He straightened himself and glanced at the bartender.

"I need a bucket of hot water, a needle, thread, and a bottle of your strongest liquor." The bartender stood there, stunned and too timid to move. Lucas took a single step towards him and with his eyes narrowed at the man, he repeated his order. The bartender nodded quickly and darted to the bar, where he retrieved all that he could remember from Lucas' list.

Only moments slipped by, but through a haze, Abigail glimpsed a flash of fire and light. Her eyes filled with the hypnotic sparks that flew around her. Through the smoke and sparks that danced like fireflies around her, Abigail found peace. She breathed in deeply.

"So this is Heaven," she said to the magic that flowed around her.

"Hold on," a voice whispered in her ear. But the voice was demanding and commanded her body to do as it willed. Although she wanted to drift further into the dream, her body refused to move an inch in any direction. No matter how hard she tried to push herself forward, she couldn't.

"What is going on?" she asked, searching for the restraints that held her down. She heard a gentle laugh from among the sparks and smoke. In the flickers of light, tiny faces stared back at her, each filling her with hope. She closed her eyes, blocking out the light from her vision.

"Please," Lucas said, pushing Donovan aside. "You need to give me room to work. I can save her life if you let me." The tone in Lucas' voice intimidated Donovan. He stared at the young man, not certain if he wanted to hit him or do as he asked. The bartender rushed to Donovan and curled his fingers around his arms to pull him back.

"Everyone, out now. Let the doctor help this poor girl." The patrons mumbled as they all stood up from their seats and left the bar. A flash of white light broke through the darkness of the night sky and rain plummeted from the clouds on to the soggy dirt at their feet.

"What happened to your daughter?" another man asked, staring at Donovan. Donovan shook his head, trying to look through the darkness to find the monster that had attacked them.

"I honestly don't know. We were traveling home through the woods when out of nowhere our horses were attacked. Suddenly we were flying through the air and we landed hard. All I could hear was my daughter screaming. When I got to her, she was like this." Donovan dropped his head into his hands and wept. The men around him tried to console him but it was no use. He wouldn't have it. He lifted his head and glared into the night.

"Why don't we find this monster and bring it to justice?" Another man stated lifting his half empty glass into the air. Donovan whipped his head towards the door and pressed his lips together.

"I will avenge my daughter. Come, grab whatever you can carry. Tonight, we hunt a beast!" The patrons of the bar cheered and gathered into a thunderous rabble before finishing off what drink they had. Then, each took to the road drawing their swords from their sheaths and marching out into the night.

Lucas' eyes looked towards the door as he sighed.

"Your father is going to get himself killed. But at least you'll be alive."

He waited for the last of the torchlight to flicker away before rushing to the bar. He searched the area and after a moment he noticed a shiny object tucked under the slab of wood. He pulled it out. "Just what I need," She said running his thumb over the blade as he glanced at Abigail, again.

"Hold on child. You are not going to die tonight."

Lucas ran back to the girl's side and stole a quick glance about him. Now the room was cleared of prying eyes, he was alone. Lucas shoved the blade into his chest exposing his heart. With a steady hand, he reached inside himself and withdrew half of his heart. A bright golden light shone from his heart and filled the room as if it were day. He smiled at the sight of the golden colors flashing around the dingy tavern.

"Just a few more minutes," he gasped, prying open Abigail’s chest and inserting the half heart into her. Once in place, Lucas moved quickly and sewed the girl’s chest up. He cleaned the area, with the towels around him and then he waited.

  Lu
cas sat beside the girl and held her hand as the storm raged on outside. With each passing moment he wondered if he was too late. And with each hour that drifted by, Lucas couldn't help but wonder about the life he had saved.

"I hope you are worth it young one. For your life is now tied to mine."

At the dawn's first light, Abigail had regained the color in her cheeks. Lucas flashed a brilliant smile, as the girl's eyes fluttered open.

"Where am I?" she asked turning her head about to search for her father. Lucas raised his head and gave a sober shake of his head, so that Abigail knew her father wasn't there. Through the dull pain in her ribs, she lifted herself up onto her elbows and stared at the young man before her. A breeze played with the golden strands of his hair, mesmerizing her.

"Do you know what happened to you?" Lucas asked. She shook her head and scanned the empty room. The stench of whiskey and old wine filled her nostrils, as she threw her legs over the side of the table. With a single push, she found the ground. Her legs trembled under her weight as she regained her footing.

  "Where is my father?"

"He went to find the creature that did this to you."

"He will never find it," she said glancing back to the young man.

  "How do you know?"

"I don't. It's more of a feeling. If that beast wanted to be found, it would be. But I don't think my father will be around to tell the tale." Abigail turned her body away from the door and flashed a half-hearted smile to Lucas.

  "I'm Abigail."

"Lucas," he lifted his hand towards her. Abigail paused for a moment to stare at it, before shaking it. As she pulled away, her eyes flickered to her torn garments. She peeled back the loose tattered fabric and gasped. A large angry red line zigged and zagged over her chest. With wide eyes she looked at Lucas.

"I had no choice," he whispered. "You were dying, and it was your father's last request that I save you."

With her lips pressed into a tight line, she nodded. Tears swelled in her eyes at the thought that her perfect body was now no more than a puzzle put back together haphazardly. She plopped down onto a chair and let the tears flow down her face.

"It's just a scar," Lucas growled. "Are you really so vain that you think yourself damaged? I saved your life."

Abigail shook her head and wiped the tears away, "It's not that. This scar will be a constant reminder of my father and how I am here and he isn't."

Lucas pulled back from her with wide eyes, staring stared at the girl in wonder. "You don't care that you have a scar, but that you lost your father?"

"How would you feel if you had lost your father?" Abigail snapped. "We were together one minute and now we are not. I can't believe he's gone."

Lucas leaned forward and placed his hand on Abigail’s knee. "Maybe he just got tired and fell asleep in the woods. We can go and look for him."

Hope filled her chest, and she sprang to her feet. Before Lucas could stop her, she was racing down the muddy path towards the woods. Lucas forced himself not to overtake her and kept behind her. With each step she took, his heart drummed in his ears. Pride filled him.

"I did make the right choice," he said to himself as he watched Abigail fly over the path.

"Well, what do we have here?" A mighty voice bellowed through the canopy of the trees. Abigail slid to a stop and her hands flew to her mouth. Her father lay, slain, in the shadow of the trees. She shook her head in denial, as Lucas came up to stand next to her and wrapped her in the safety of his arms, shielding her from the scene.

"Little Brother," the booming voice bellowed high above them. Abigail tried to find the source of the voice, but it was Lucas who spotted the creature, lurking in the tree’s boughs, at the highest point.

"I see you have done something very bad," the voice called out shaking the ground. "I don't think the others will approve."

"Leave us Tybrus," Lucas howled, holding onto Abigail tighter than before.

"I don't think so. That girl is mine. She was a snack that got away."

  "You can't have her."

"Do you think you can stop me?" Tybrus laughed. Anger filled Abigail. She pushed away from Lucas and raced to her father's side, where his blade lay under his body. In a move driven by pure anger she ripped the blade from its sheath and held it up to the sky.

  "Face justice, Monster!"

  "Abigail, no!"

Before Lucas could wrap his arms around her, she was flying through the air. Her body slammed against the trees knocking the air from her lungs. Lucas was at her side in an instant.

"Don't do this," Lucas pleaded with the creature.

"But it is my duty, Brother."

The creature let loose a mighty breath from his mouth, NS fire engulfed Abigail and Lucas. Lucas held onto Abigail pressing her head to his chest.

"No matter what, I'll find you. No matter how many lives it takes, I'll wait for you to come back to me."

  Chapter 1

The rumbling of the bass rocked Abby as she sat in the booth beside Jess, watching the crowd on the dance floor. Her eyes were locked on the hypnotic lights bouncing off the crowd, giving the illusion the crowd was flying.

She sighed heavily pulling a swig from her cup before resting her hand on her head. Everything about the night was dull. From the music playing to the atmosphere and even the company she was with. All that Abby could think about was the term paper she had been putting off since last week. She lifted her head and turned to her friend. Jess swayed to the music without a care in the world.

With a slight nudge of her elbow, Abby tapped Jess, “I think I am going to go. Tonight just doesn’t seem to be doing it for me.”

“What?” Jess shouted over the music and leaned in closer to Abby. Abby scrunched her brow and glared at Jess.

“I’m leaving. Think you can find your own way home?”

“Why do you want to go? The night is still young.”

“Maybe for you,” Abby pushed her drink to the center of the table and reached down for her purse. She fumbled around the inside pocket before pulling out her wallet.

“Don’t go,” Jess insisted. “You haven’t even finished your drink.”

“I’m just not into it tonight. Besides, I’ve got a lot of homework and being out is giving me a headache.” Abby tapped her fingers to her temples before dropping her hand and unzipping her wallet. She pulled out a few bills, set them on the table and rose. Before Abby could sling her purse over her shoulder, Jess’s hand was on her arm. Abby flashed her eyes at her friend. Jess’s eyes widened with glee and her mouth dropped open.

“I can’t believe he came,” Jess said with a huge smile on her face. Abby tried to scan the crowd to see whom Jess was talking about, but she couldn’t see through the dancers crowding the floor.

“Who came?” Abby asked craning her neck to see whom Jess was drooling over.

“Ty,” Jess pointed through the crowd. Abby’s heart sank into her stomach. Her palms went from cold to hot and every fiber of her nerves rattled. She sucked in a deep breath trying to steady herself.

“Why is he here?” Abby mumbled trying not to look desperate. Her hand flew to Jess and she found herself clawing Jess’s arm in panic.

  “Relax, I invited him.”

“You know how I feel about him.”

“That’s why I asked him to come, it turns out he totally likes you too.”

“You can’t be serious. He is like…” Abby fumbled to find the words to describe how perfect Ty was in her eyes, but refrained from making a further fool of herself.

Abby swallowed down the lump that was lodged in her throat and released Jess’s arm.

“I’m still going. I have stuff to do and…” Abby tried to finish her thoughts but the sight of Ty moving like a ghost through the crowd towards their table caused havoc on her heart rate. She tried to find the words, but still nothing came out. She shook her head and forced herself to look at Jess.

“Well, bye,” Abby said finally pushing herself away
from the table. She sucked air in deeply through her nose and stepped forward. Her knees wobbled as her nerves kept her from placing a steady foot down. Her hand shot out, trying to get a grip on the table to stop herself from falling. She found herself in sturdy arms. She looked up.

Her face flushed with embarrassment as she saw Ty was holding her. For a split second she just knew her heart had stopped. He smiled down at her and helped her to stand. Abby gripped the edge of the table and tried to calm herself as Jess giggled uncontrollably.

“Easy there,” Ty said keeping his eyes locked on Abby. “You okay?”

“Careful, someone must have spilt a drink there.”

“Good to know, but are you sure you haven’t had too much to drink, yourself?” Ty wondered keeping a keen eye on Abby. She brushed the loose strands of hair from her eyes and shook her head.

“Abby drink. You’re joking right?” Jess laughed. Abby flashed daggers at her friend before turning her attention to Ty.

“Thanks for saving me.” The words that came from her lips weren’t as smooth as she had hoped they would be. But Ty’s smile widened, and he nodded.

“If you’ll excuse me, I am going now.”

“Where you headed off to?” Ty asked glancing from Abby to Jess and back again.

“Back to the dorms. Before I embarrass myself anymore,” Abby whispered and dropped her head. She knew her beet-red face was brighter than the strobe lights flying about the room. She only hoped that the dark corner would keep Ty from seeing just how red she really was.

“Mind if I walk with you?” he asked extending his hand to Abby.

“You just got here,” Abby said tucking her hair behind her ear and hoisting her purse higher onto her shoulder. Jess leaned back in her chair watching the awkwardness.

“Actually, I only came because Jess told me this is where you would be. Clubs aren’t really my thing.”

Abby’s heart sputtered as Jess nudged her side. The smirk on Jess’s face was enough to send her nerves into overdrive. Abby shook her head trying to keep her eyes on the ground.
